For most new drivers in Melbourne today, an automatic is the more practical choice because the majority of new cars sold in Australia are automatic, and city traffic is much easier to manage without a clutch. However, learning manual gives you a skill that can be useful later and generally makes transitioning between vehicle types easier.

Beginners/ Teenagers Driver Education and Training

The first steps towards getting your licence in Victoria.

To apply for a learner permit in Victoria, you must meet the following requirements:

Be at least 16 years of age.
Have a Victorian residential address.
Provide acceptable proof of identity.
Be medically fit to drive.
Not be disqualified from obtaining a learner permit.
Not be subject to a Fines Victoria licence suspension.
Have no outstanding relicensing requirements
Read the Road to Solo Driving handbook before taking the learner permit test.
Successfully pass all required tests, including the learner permit test.

Overseas License Holders

When to convert your overseas licence

If you’re moving to Victoria and plan to live here for more than 6 months, you must convert your overseas driver licence or learner permit to a Victorian one.
If you’re staying for less than 6 months, you can drive with your overseas driver licence or learner permit – as long as it’s valid, and it’s in English or has a translation.
